Steps to a Great Marketing Plan

Steps to a Great Marketing PlanMarketing plans are for VP’s of corporations, too many small business owners think – falsely believing a business card, brochure, website and Social Media are the only marketing tools they require.  If your marketing efforts are shot-in-the-dark risks rather than profitable investments, you might want to reconsider creating a solid marketing plan – even if it’s a few points scribbled on a sheet of paper!  Here are the steps:
Step 1:  State Your Business Purpose – start with a summary of your purpose. For example – I empower entrepreneurs, professionals and book authors by providing them effective, efficient, affordable, marketing/PR advice and solutions to match their schedules, budgets and circumstances. I give them the BIG AGENCY feeling without the BIG AGENCY price – so they don’t have to face their marketing/PR problems alone and can take their businesses up a level!
Step 2:  Define Your Market Situation – What challenges, transformations and opportunities are you enduring in relation to your client’s?  Will these changes affect their purchasing power??  How much direct & indirect competition do you have vying for your clients’ dollars?? Are they initiating programs to threaten your business or closing and leaving you with a void to fill?  What seasonal and economic changes influence your business?  What physical adjustments (building renovations or roadwork) are reducing accessibility and parking? Are there any regional, local or industry events to capitalize on?
Step 3:  Set Goals and Objectives – What’s your goal – to land 3 more clients, participate in a trade show, incorporate social media, give a talk, host a special event, obtain media coverage or join a networking group? Whatever marketing measure you implement to increase revenue, arriving at your destination and achieving success, begins with knowing where you’re headed and how to get there.  Write your goals down and stick to them. Each time a new option arises, ask yourself…Will this bring me closer to my goal or take me off my path?   If so, pass on it.
Step 4:  Define Your Target Profile – in terms of their age, gender, religion, ethnicity, martial status, income, education, household and location.  Include their attitudes, behavioural patterns, spending habits, beliefs, values, hobbies and interests. What do they do on weekends? Do they read books, newspapers, journals or magazines? Watch TV, listen to radio or both?  How often are they online??  Are they Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn users?
This information with help you:
  • Develop appealing marketing tactics & remain in contact
  • Create PR & advertising messages that align your unique approach, interests and emotions with existing and prospective customers
  • Select effective communication vehicles
  • Weigh media sales pitches & placements
  • Project a unified image that reinforces your position, brand & creative strategy

Buona lettura.

News data proves "please ReTweet" generates 4x more ReTweets

For some time now, I've had data that has shown that including "Please ReTweet" in tweets works, but I've gotten some questions recently that made me really want to put forward the most conclusive evidence I could find to address this point.
Therefore, I gathered a statistically significant sample set (see below for confidence intervals) of more than 10,000 tweets that did not start with an "@" sign, and I did some analysis.
First, I looked at the percentage of tweets that were retweeted and found that 51% of tweets that included "Please ReTweet" were retweeted more than once, 39% of those including "Please RT" were retweeted more than once, and only 12% of tweets that included neither were retweeted more than once.
This data shows, with 99% confidence, that tweets including either "Please ReTweet" or "Please RT" are more likely to get retweeted than tweets without those phrases. I've listed the plus-or-minus ranges below to a 90% confidence interval so you can see just how significant this data is.
please retweet binary
Then, I looked at the number of times the tweets in my sample were retweets, and what I found was a little surprising.
As I said, tweets that included either "Please ReTweet" or "Please RT" generated more retweets than tweets that didn't use those phrases. Surprisingly however, "Please ReTweet"-containing tweets were retweeted 20.9 times on average, whereas "Please RT"-containing tweets had an average of only 6.1 retweets. Tweets including neither phrase returned an average of 4.2 retweets.
The graph below shows the distribution of retweet counts for each of the three tweet types and shows that "Please Retweet" gets far more retweets than "Please RT" does.

What do you think this data means? Will you start including "Please ReTweet" in your tweets to generate more retweets?

Io penso di no, e voglio provartelo.

Ho avuto più volte conversazioni simili nell’ultimo anno:

Io: Usi un servizio di check-in?
Loro: No

I risultati dello studio

I risultati dello studio

My folks saved £100 by deleting cookie from yesterday's browsing session").

Indicazioni analoghe, sempre non confermate, riguardano altre compagnie aeree low-cost, come Easyjet.

A voi risulta?

How to Become the Awesomest Marketer EVER
Nobody likes being interrupted. That includes your customers, leads, prospects, neighbors, children, etc. We used to tolerate intrusive advertising. These days, we don't have to.
Once upon a time, your audience could easily be found listening to the radio, watching TV, searching for your business in the yellow pages, attending a trade show, or sifting thoughtfully through a small stack of mail.

  • 78% of people use search engines to conduct product research.
  • 57% of US Adult Internet users conducted a search today.
  • 93% of US Adult Internet users are on Facebook.
  • One out of every eight minutes online is spent on Facebook. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there, and outbound marketers are wearing steak-flavored underpants.
In 2007, HubSpot had 10 beta customers, 5 employees, and generated roughly 60-90 leads per month. Today, we have 4,500 customers, 200 employees, and generate 40,000 leads per month. Much of that growth (and a large portion of those 40,000 leads) was produced by inbound marketing assets (like blog posts, ebooks, videos, presentations, podcasts, etc.) that were created four years ago by those first five employees.
Awesome marketers build awesome marketing teams. They recognize that in today's rapidly changing world, marketing experience matters less than digital chops, an analytical mindset, existing "reach," and the ability to create remarkable content. At HubSpot, we refer to this short list of attributes as "DARC" (Digital, Analytical, Reach, Content), and we actively recruit, hire, and develop awesome marketers that possess these very qualities.
Remember the good old "K.I.S.S." acronym? That's right—"Keep It Simple, Silly." The Awesomest Marketer Ever seeks to streamline and simplify her marketing tools and processes. Instead of using one product for analytics, another for social media, a third for SEO, a fourth for her website, a fifth for email, and three or four others for sales and CRM functions, she's smart enough to seek out the ONE that pulls them all together.

Want to become The Awesomest Marketer EVER? Here's a simple 5-step formula to guarantee your success.
STEP 1: Stop Interrupting People!
Which is probably why 91% of people have unsubscribed to an email they previously opted-in to, and why 86% of people skip TV ads, and at least 44% of direct mail goes straight into the recycling bin.
Instead of interrupting the things in which people are interested, awesome marketers work on becoming the things in which people are interested.
STEP 2. Be Where Your Audience Is.
NO LONGER.
Today's reality is both more fascinating and more challenging for many marketers, and it is this: your audience is online.
Get the idea?
Put another way, Google is your new business card, and Facebook is your new referral engine. If you are not AWESOME at using search engines and social networks to market your company/product/service, you are most definitely missing the proverbial boat.
STEP 3. Go inbound!
Outbound marketing—or the practice of paying for "impressions"—might appear to be the easiest, fastest way to reach your audience, but what happens when you stop paying?
Nothing, that's what.
Because outbound marketing does not create any reusable assets. It's the single-serving, disposal snack-pack of marketing.
Inbound marketing, by contrast, requires much less cash (if any) upfront, but more effort and time. Your results may not be instant, but they'll be lasting.
Example:
Collectively, HubSpot's library of inbound marketing assets have amassed over 7,000,000 views. Our monthly web traffic is more than double that of better-known, more established companies that are many times our size. Between blog subscribers, email lists, and social media fans/followers, our reach is more like that of a media company than a marketing software company.
All of this is true because we eat our own dogfood, and that awesome food happens to be called Inbound Marketing.
STEP 4. Build an awesome marketing team!
Read more about building an awesome marketing team here.
STEP 5: Simplify!
Come to think of it, it's quite likely that the Awesomest Marketer Ever is a HubSpot customer... or at the very least, is considering becoming one soon ;).

So cosa stai facendo e dove sei. Paura, eh?

So cosa hai fatto 5 minuti fa.
Non proprio a me, certo.
Ci metto 5 minuti a capire chi sei, dove sei, cosa stai facendo.
Come?
Account Foursquare e check-in: i ladri ringraziano.
Su Facebook ci inseriamo nome e cognome, mail e telefono, indirizzo e luogo di lavoro, relazioni e familiari…e molto, molto altro.

From Pamela Seiple / Hubspot Blog

Let's face it, mom has taught us a lot over the years. From showing us how to brush our teeth in our early years to teaching us about love as teenagers and offering wisdom about how to be a successful, happy adult as we've grown older; in one way or another, our mothers have helped mold us into the people we are today. In the shadow of Mother's Day, I got to thinking about the many lessons I've learned from my mother and which ones could be applied to marketing, and I realized that, hey, there are quite a few!

1. Share! Okay, so mom was probably referring to things like toys -- not content -- but isn't it coincidental that the concept of sharing was probably one of the first things your mom taught you and also one of the most important parts of inbound marketing? Successful business marketers understand that sharing -- particularly content sharing -- is an extremely important part of inbound marketing. Their moms would be proud.

2. Plan ahead. I don't know about yours, but my mom was never a huge proponent of procrastination. In most situations, she taught me it was a good idea to come up with a plan of attack. Same goes for marketers. Likely, you have some goals to accomplish, whether they be in terms of traffic, leads, or even customers. While some spontaneity can make sense from time to time, your modern marketing team should always be planning ahead, whether it be in terms of a content strategy, an events schedule, or other marketing programs and initiatives.

3. Treat others as you’d like to be treated. The Golden Rule needn't only apply to your elementary school years. In the world of marketing, businesses should treat prospects the way they'd prefer to be treated. Be mindful of how your audience would respond to your marketing tactics, and ask yourself, if I were the one being marketed to, is this how I'd like to be treated?

4. Stay in touch. When you got older, you went off to college or moved into your own place to start your first job, leaving good ole mom behind. One of her few requests was likely that you keep in touch. Just like you wouldn't ignore your mom, don't ignore your community, whether it be prospects, customers, fans, or followers. Stay connected with your target audiences by frequently engaging with them via social media, email, or events.

5. Have an open mind, and don’t be afraid to try new things. When your mom said this, she was likely referring to those green veggies you were pushing around your plate, but even some of the most innovative marketers are the ones who aren't afraid to experiment with new marketing techniques and channels. Don't shy away from trying out new marketing trends; just be sure to do your research first, and take caution. Then evaluate your results, and make smart decisions about whether to stick with that marketing channel or focus on something else.

6. Stay up-to-date with current events. My mom always encouraged me to stay up-to-date with the news, and it's no different in marketing. Read news about your industry so you can stay on top of trends and developments. Understanding what's currently happening in your industry will make you a more intelligent marketer, and it might also even inspire some topic ideas for content creation. Make it easy to stay on top of industry news by subscribing to relevant industry blogs or news sites.

7. Tell the truth. Lying is another thing that has never been tolerated by my mom, and it won't get you very far as a marketer either. Particularly in this increasingly online world, transparency is key for businesses. Lies don't last long on the internet, and marketers who deceive their prospects and customers won't exactly get a reputation as the most trustworthy brand around.

8. Admit when you’re wrong, and say you’re sorry when you mess up. "We all make mistakes," said mom. Even in the business world, no one is perfect. Even though we have the best intentions, sooner or later, we might make a mistake. To successfully handle crises that arise, communicate! Admit that you're wrong, fix your mistake, and if an apology is necessary, make it. Likely, your audience will respect your recognition of the error and will be more likely to forgive your mistake if you approach it head-on.

9. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. You fell off your bike, but mom encouraged you to brush the dust off your pants, get back on, and try again. Similarly, there will be months when your marketing programs just aren't performing the way you want them to, and your goals seem impossible to achieve. Maybe you experimented with something new, and it failed miserably. Pick your head up, come up with a new plan, and try again. Your mom will love you for it... and so will your CMO.

What other life lessons has mom taught you that are applicable to marketing?

Note to self: the past 24 hours have provided, yet again, a reminder that it is oh-so-important to fill oneself up with the good, the lovely and the positive.

Let’s see, we have the dear friend of mine who ran into her ex and felt terrible about herself ‘all over again’, the neighbor who can’t seem to get in shape and told me ‘to hell with it’ because she doesn’t have the time to focus on herself (four children under the age of six) and the client who was in total (and I mean total) distress as her computer crashed, furthering her missed deadline on a long running, time sensitive project now jeopardizing the promotion that is due to come her way.

And then there is me. Anxious about pending client work, a wee-bit of Mom nervousness because the last little bird is leaving the coop and my overall direction in midlife as I play with patches and creams and the meaning of ‘why am I here rabbit, oh why?’ I find myself searching out for the good to feel better. It’s something I actively do and has served me well.

And so I realize that these words, these vehicles that transmit meaning and care and information and assessment all play such a valuable role in our lives. It is these words that we read that can shock us, surprise us or simply soothe us. I prefer the latter, remembering my first read of Norman Vincent Peale’s ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’ and the combination of words and feeling positive and how it all came together.

That was my first step into this motivational, let’s-look-at-the-good-side-and-help you-out world. This has only grown for me, after suffering (ok, I admit, bad choice of words here, I hate the idea of victimization) through a verbally abusive marriage that was so tough on my psyche that I began asking friends and family, ‘am I that bad? Really, you can tell me the truth. I have been told that I don’t walk right, and I am a mess, don’t make enough money, blah, blah blah.’ After years of therapy, and a determination to master what was happening to me, I realized that I took these words thrown my way and incorporated them into the fabric of who I was.

I took back my power and left and started over. It was then that the wah-lah! hit – I needed to feed myself full of positive – anything that helped me reframe was incorporated into my daily world – words in music, words in books, words in quotes, words in articles – all helped me feed that void of knowing that life is actually quite a fabulous entertaining ride and that we are all here to love and be loved.

The coolness of this ‘wah-lah’ moment was game changing for me. I now work to share this with others. So these words, whether they are thrown our way or shared with us on an email or told to us by ourselves (often the worst at making us internalize and feel bad, I call this your Jiminy Cricket, that little voice that tells you just awful, terrible things that are happening or about to happen) have HUGE power over us.

As a marketer I am well aware that people think in pictures and words do the painting – think of the difference of how you feel after reading, ‘Life is difficult, challenges are many’ and then, ‘You are loved.’ Wow, right?

As I hear those in my world share their angst, I realize how a slight change in these word combinations could change their day. Seeing one’s ex and managing through that moment is not something I would recommend but hey, it could be worse. These people that provide us such pain are really our best teachers so if you can think of seeing them with a ‘thanks for teaching me’ and ‘now I am on my way, thank you very much,’ it’ll help you realize that you are back in the drivers seat and on the mend.

For the Mom who has frustrations with her weight, a quick ‘thank you universe for these four healthy children’ combined with a quick reminder, ‘this too shall pass as they will grow, you are doing great and don’t be so hard on yourself’ puts the yuck of the frustration with the lack of free time in place. The worker bee with OMG galore turned her world around with a realization that she has a job (!) and her delay actually pushed her to get some help (including purchasing an online back-up system) and in the oddest of ways, she was grateful for the panic as it forced her to deal with an issue she has avoided for years. She used her words of ‘moving forward in my career, no matter the obstacle’ to understand the not-so-unusual issues that work often brings.

For moi? Perhaps the best for me is what I always share with others – we are indeed, not alone and there is no need to take oneself so dam seriously. Mr. Jiminy Cricket can stand by, hat in hand, full of gratitude for all that life offers us. Or, as I often remind him, right now, this very second, as you think about things, or read this or get ready to get out the door, right now someone new is being born (ew, that is clunky language but you get the picture), someone is passing away, someone is falling in love, someone is getting wretched news and someone is laughing with delight. Here we are, all experiencing this together.

Now that changes ones day. Those are the words that paint the picture I treasure, that of gratitude. A gentle reminder to watch what you take in and what you allow. Here’s to your words, your thoughts and your day. Enjoy.
